Let’s Talk—Criticism

Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 2 pm

The decline of independent art criticism shows how cultural power is changing. As private collectors take on greater roles on museum boards and establish their own institutions, curatorial authority has shifted from the dealer-critic system to the dealer-collector system. This change puts market validation above critical evaluation and turns criticism into a kind of brand management for institutions.

Today, discussions about art often focus more on context—like identity, biography, and politics—than on formal analysis. As a result, people sometimes mix up aesthetic critique with moral judgment. Also, as curators become the main interpreters, independent critics have lost much of their influence in shaping art conversations and deciding what becomes part of the canon.

This open conversation looks at the forces that shape art criticism, how wealth and cultural authority are connected, and whether independent criticism can survive today. With no invited speakers and an open-circle format, everyone can join in and explore these questions together.

Join us to discuss the mechanisms of critical discourse, institutional power, and the possibilities for rigorous aesthetic evaluation in contemporary practice.
