Deborah Lynn Irmas
Deborah Lynn Irmas is a Los Angeles based visual artist. Her practice considers the textile and tactile materiality that was deeply embedded in her childhood. Growing up in a household surrounded by fabrics, yarn and other sewing notions, she developed an attachment to the materials that her Salvadoran mother worked with. “Everyday was the same…I would come home from school and my mother would be working with her hands on the floor surrounded by all sorts of materials. I often work the same way now which gives me a sense of home and comfort.” Deborah Lynn’s work has evolved into a recognition of her mother’s history, her Salvadoran birthright and her own bi-cultural narrative. Deborah Lynn Irmas’ work is part of MOLAA’s (Museum of Latin American Art) permanent collection and has been exhibited in galleries in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Pasadena, and Puglia, Italy. She has also exhibited at the Torrance Art Museum, Santa Monica Museum of Art and the Venice Art Walk. Irmas has received various awards such as the Award of Merit by the Society of Illustrators, the UCLA Clifton Webb Scholarship, and the Barnsdall Art Award. She completed her BFA in Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts from UCLA and continued courses in Fashion Illustration, Graphic Design, Textile Design, Printmaking, and most notably has been a long time student of the esteemed artist Tom Wudl, whom she thanks as her mentor.
