Untitled Art, Special Projects—Alfredo Travieso
Join Alfredo at Special Projects at Untitled Art, Miami Beach 2026. Alfredo presents Political Geometry, a sculpture that extends his ongoing body of work rooted in spatial painting and inspired by geometric abstraction. Exploring material as a political symbol, the work reimagines rebar—a material inseparable from labor and construction—as something deliberately broken and painted, imbued with a sense of humor that speaks to folly. It gestures toward function while remaining fractured, toward progress while remaining stunted, holding both possibilities in tension without resolving into either.
Pink threads through the work as a symbol of childlike innocence and the body, softening the industrial material even as it complicates it. The piece is political precisely because it engages architecture, the structure that quietly directs human psychology and locomotion, shaping how bodies move through and perceive space — extending the earlier spatial paintings’ concern with geometry as an organizing, disciplining force into three dimensions.
At its core, the sculpture stages cognitive dissonance: the tension between belief and contradiction. That dissonance is not abstract — it is embodied in the disappointment and tragedy inherent to human experience, where what we hope structures will provide (stability, progress, protection) collides with the fractured, broken, and folly-laden reality of the materials that build them.
